CURRENT RAMAN INSTRUMENTS FOR SPACE EXPLORATION UTILIZE A SINGLE EXCITATION WAVELENGTH, WITH A LASER IN THE NEAR-INFRARED (IR) TO MINIMIZE FLUORESCENCE BACKGROUND. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO EMPLOY A DUAL EXCITATION (VISIBLE AND NEAR-IR LASERS) RAMAN INSTRUMENT TO MINIMIZE BACKGROUND EMISSION. THE POLYMER LAMINATES ARE MECHANICALLY ROBUST EXHIBITING A 165MPA YIELD STRENGTH, 200MPA TENSILE STRENGTH, 550MPA TENSILE MODULUS, AND 3% ELONGATION TO YIELD. IN PHASE II, WE PROPOSE TO OPTIMIZE BARRIER PROPERTIES TO REDUCE WEIGHT, MINIMIZE ASH ON INCINERATION, DEVELOP HEAT-SEALING METHODS, AND EXPAND THE TESTING TO INCLUDE HEAT SEALED ENCLOSURES. HOWEVER THE ABSENCE OF MATERIALS WITH SUITABLE TIME CONSTANTS FOR THE RELEVANT ELECTRONIC PROCESSES HAS HINDERED THE REALIZATION OF THIS METHOD.
